What ‘leaving well’ says about how we ‘work well’.

Vicky | Oct 2026

The nature of agency life is constantly changing. Maintaining stability while embracing and adapting to change is practically in our DNA.

Over the last few months, we’ve sadly said goodbye to a few of our brilliant "Unboxeders." But the good news is, it’s all been for wonderful reasons: well-earned retirements, long-awaited travel opportunities, returning to much-missed home countries, or stepping into dream roles and fresh challenges. They aren’t leaving because they’re burnt out, disillusioned, or unhappy. They’re simply moving on to their next chapter.

That distinction matters to us. Here is what "leaving well" looks like at Unboxed and why it is central to how we build a healthy company culture.

The iteration of 'working well'.

"Working well" is core to our strategy, values, and principles. We don't always get everything right, but the wellbeing of our people is a constant priority. Keeping our culture front and center is an ongoing process. A job that is never truly finished, but always iterated on.

It’s essential that every new joiner receives a warm, positive welcome during onboarding. But it’s equally important to us that whenever someone moves on, they leave well.

What does 'leaving well' actually mean?

Beyond the standard administrative exit protocols, leaving well involves something quieter and more nuanced. When team members prepare to move on, they authentically express a desire to make the absolute most of their remaining time.

In practice, leaving well means:

  • Maintaining momentum: Continuing to deliver their best work for clients, projects, and internal teammates right up until their final day.
  • Knowledge sharing: Documenting and passing along skills, insights, and processes so the team feels supported long after the departure.
  • Leaving a positive legacy: Ensuring the value they built remains intact for current colleagues and future joiners.

When people feel motivated to finish strong, it speaks volumes about the workplace climate. Over the past year, departing Unboxeders have captured everything from our marketing playbook to deep-dive AI learnings. That captured knowledge feeds directly back into our team and enriches the onboarding process for new hires.

Keeping the door open: the value of boomerang employees.

Leaving well creates space for people to return. A dynamic that offers huge benefits for both the organisation and the individual. Former employees already know our culture, and we know their strengths.

When team members rejoin us, they integrate seamlessly back into our projects and ways of working:

  • When Rhian returned to us, she was able to hit the ground running, bringing her skills right back into our active projects.
  • We’re equally thrilled to have Michelle back with us for her third chapter at Unboxed, diving straight in and bringing fresh energy.

Embracing change and growth in agency life.

As a close-knit agency, team changes are inevitable, and departures are always felt deeply. There have certainly been a few tears shed this year! But while saying goodbye to great people is tough, it also creates space for growth, new energy, and fresh perspectives.

We adapt, evolve, and feel genuinely excited to welcome new talent to the team. We’re incredibly proud to have played a part in every former team member's professional journey. And we can't wait to see where their next adventures take them.
